Nassau, The Bahamas, August 17 – Former champions of regional volleyball Barbados stamped their authority on Day 2 of the 19th CAZOVA tournament being played here in Nassau, The Bahamas yesterday. Unfortunately, Guadeloupe suffered two tough losses.
In the first game of the morning the former 10 times kings defeated Guadeloupe 25-23, 25-15, 23-25, 25-12. In spite of numerous serving errors and generous substitutions in the third set by Barbados Guadeloupe could not match the fire from captain Akeel Oxley, Jabarry Goodridge and the irrepressible Ahkeem Mayers.
Today Barbados will clash with Curaçao who took a five sets Group B match from Trinidad and Tobago 25-23, 21-25, 25-15, 26-28, 15-13. Curacao erred in not closing out the match in four sets when they held game and match point 24-22.
The Bajan women were spectacular in dismissing defending champions Jamaica 25-21, 25-19, 25-21 thanks to a total team effort. The leading attack from professional player Shonte Seale and Ashley Jordan denied Jamaica a set.
Captain Sashalee Thomas piloted Jamaica to leads of 9-2 and 14-5 before Barbados reeled them in. Dessani Waithe came off the bench at 13-18 to rack up some aces as Barbados locked and took the set and match.
In the night cap game, the Bahamas gave their fans something to cheer about as they edged Guadeloupe 17-25, 25-20, 25-15, 16-25, 15-11 in a Group A encounter.
